- Mana island has the second largest population of Takahe in the world and is one of the most important breeding sites for these rare and ancient birds. There are 39 other bird species
on the island too.
Mana Island is also home for a range of lizards
including, the spotted skink, Wellington green geckos, Duvaucel’s geckos, speckled skinks, and Mcgregors skink.
Hear the story of why there was a concrete gannet colony and find out about the island’s Cook Strait giant weta, deinacrida rugosa , which is believed to be the world’s heaviest insect.
