Tuesday 7 February
This morning we commence our
journey of the East Coast making our way north through the scenic Awakino Gorge
and on to Cambridge, Lake Karapiro taking a break in the interesting town of
Tirau before heading over the Mamaku Ranges to Rotorua with a stop at Kuirau
Park before arriving at our accommodation. ACCOMMODATION:Kingsgate Rotorua
Wednesday 8 February
This morning we travel on to
Whakatane then on to Opotiki to continue on the Pacific Coast Highway around
the East Cape. With some magnificent
views of some of the lovely bays (and
weather permitting White Island, the volcanic outlet for the Central North
Island geothermal area) and interesting sightseeing stops along the way,
including stopping enroute at Whanarua
Bay to visit Pacific Coast Macadamias, a little latter we arrive at Hicks Bay
our overnight stay. There will be time
to take a short walk to enjoy this area. ACCOMMODATION: Hicks Bay Motel
Thursday 9 February
After a hearty breakfast we
bid Hicks Bay farewell and continue our journey around the Eastcape to the most Easterly town of Te Araroa before
travelling on down through Tikitiki, Ruatoria, Tokomaru Bay with a stop at
Tolaga Bay, where we view the historic jetty which has been undergoing major
refurbishment before arriving in Gisborne, our home for the next 3 nights. ACCOMMODATION: Teal Motor Lodge
Friday 10 February
Today is a FREE day in
Gisborne. You may like to join a day
tour or you may opt for an easy day relaxing at the hotel or checking out the
shops.
Saturday 11 February
Today we explore Gisborne
commencing with a morning cruise on the historic MV Takitimu taking in views of
Gisborne from the water and out into Poverty Bay. After lunch we continue our sightseeing of Gisborne by coach before returning
to our accommodation for some relaxing time before dinner.
Sunday 12 February
We depart Gisborne this
morning where we head south to the pretty little town of Wairoa situated on the
Wairoa River. Continuing on from Wairoa
and view the awesome Mohaka Viaduct, with a span of 278 m across the Mohaka
River and a height of 95 m. It is then
on down through the majestic hills and valleys to arrive in Napier where we
stay for the next 2 nights. ACCOMMODATION:Central
City Inn
Monday 13 February
After breakfast this morning
we enjoy the sights of Napier and its twin city Hastings. We start with a short drive to Hastings for a wee look
around before visiting Pernels orchard for a guided tour and a morning tea
break, heading on back to Napier we enjoy a visit to the National Aquarium of
New Zealand and learn about the wild-life wonders under the sea. Later on there will be time for wandering
around and exploring and a visit to Classic Sheepskins where we have a tour of
the tannery and manufacture of their many products.
